The Behaviour Intervention Service (BIS) is a specialist service provided by Aspect for families, carers, schools and non-Government agencies who support children and adolescents with a disability, who have an emerging or current challenging behaviour. The program is funded through the Ageing Disability and Home Care (ADHC); however, a small registration fee is required for all BIS services.
To access BIS services, the client must:
1. Be aged 0 to 18 years
2. Have a diagnosed disability including autism spectrum disorders, intellectual disability, developmental delay, acquired brain injury and chromosomal or syndromic conditions.
3. Present with challenging behaviour which:
- may result in exclusion from typical school, home and/or community settings
- requires multi-element assessment and intervention supports
- often results in reduced quality of life for the person and his/her family
- often impedes social relationships and learning
4. Reside in following area:
- Penrith Local Government Area
- Blue Mountains Local Government Area
- Hawkesbury Local Government Area
- Blacktown suburbs of Bidwill, Blackett, Dharruk, Eastern Creek, Emerton, Hassall Grove, Shanes Park, Hebersham, Lethbridge Park, Marsden Park, Minchinbury, Mt Druitt, Oakhurst, Plumpton, Glendenning, Riverstone, Rooty Hill, Rouse Hill, Schofields, Shalvey, St Marys, Tregear, Vineyard, Whalan and Willmot of the Nepean LGA
BIS features specialist support services that:
- Provide training, advice, behavioural assessment and/or intervention for individuals, families, carers, school staff, and non-Government service providers
- Focus on an individual with challenging behaviour to support their living and care arrangements
- Ensures a holistic approach to identifying and addressing key individual factors that may precipitate challenging or negative behaviour
- Ensures flexibility in the type and range of intervention services
BIS services include:
- Referral to other service providers if required
- Assessment of a person's behavioural profile
- Behaviour intervention and social skills training
- Family support and advice
- Training and information related to positive behaviour support
- Service co-ordination and planning
- Behaviour Workshops behaviour support training for parents/carers and professionals
