How the service works
1. Applying for the service
A referral form must be completed before a service can be activated. As the service requires a client to have a disability, you must indicate the nature of the disability and attach a copy of the disability diagnostic report made by a Paediatrician, Psychologist or Psychiatrist to the referral form. Within two weeks of the referral being received and service criteria met, an Aspect Behaviour Intervention consultant will call you to confirm that the referral will be taken to the referral panel and give you the date of that panel.
2. Waiting for the referral panel
The Aspect Behaviour Intervention Service has an intake panel that meets every two months, so you will not receive a service immediately. Aspect aims to offer support in the interim including: telephone advice, invitations to available training opportunities and access to other resources such as books and information sheets.
3. Panel intake
Aspect Behaviour Intervention Service has a bi-monthly intake panel that includes members from Aspect, NSW Department of Human Services – Ageing, Disability and Home Care, Northcott Disability Services, and the Spastic Centre. The panel will decide whether the referral is appropriate, or whether your needs may be best met through another service. Following the panel, you will be contacted by an Aspect Behaviour Intervention Service team member to let you know the outcome.
4. Initial consult within the home
If your application is approved by the panel, a meeting will be scheduled during which a consultant will meet you to explain how the service works, and to invite you to attend Positive Behaviour Support training sessions. The consultant will also ask specific questions relating to your child’s behaviour, current management of the behaviour, history of the behaviour, and general information about family functioning. This meeting will usually take between 1 to 2 hours. You may be asked to collect some information on specially designed data forms. You and the Aspect Behaviour Intervention Service consultant will also sign a service agreement.
5. Attendance at training
All parents or caregivers who make a referral to Aspect Behaviour Intervention Service are required to attend a parent training course. The course is held over 3 separate days, for one day each fortnight over a 6 week period. The group is also an opportunity for you to meet and network with other parents and carers who may be experiencing similar challenges to yourself. At the first group meeting, you will be required to pay the one-off fee of $50.00. If the fee, or the group attendance presents a problem for you, please contact the Aspect Behaviour Intervention Service to discuss this.
6. Home based support
Following each training day, a Aspect Behaviour Intervention Service clinician will come to your home to help you implement strategies and plans developed in the training. You will receive a minimum of 3 sessions within your home. The consultant will collaborate with you to develop comprehensive intervention which will need to be implemented at home and may require specific coaching in different strategies which parents/carers can use.
7. Other services
The consultant may also ask whether he or she could visit your child’s school or preschool (if appropriate) to conduct an observation and to speak with teaching staff. The Aspect Behaviour Intervention Service consultant may also wish to make contact with other agencies involved with your family such as Community Services, NSW Department of Human Services – Ageing, Disability and Home Care, speech pathologists, paediatricians, psychologists etc. During the service, the consultant may consider it necessary to refer you to other service providers such as counsellors, family therapists, and support groups to assist with issues other than behavioural support for your child.
8. Completion of service
At the end of the service your Aspect Behaviour Intervention Service consultant will provide you with a service summary letter describing the interventions completed and making recommendations about how to manage any future problem behaviours should they arise.
9. Follow up
If problem behaviours do arise after the completion of the service, families can ask the Aspect Behaviour Intervention Service consultant for information about further supports.
Aspect Behaviour Intervention Service works within the Keep Them Safe guidelines and legislation relating to child care and protection. Please note that on the referral form for the Aspect Behaviour Intervention Service, you will be required to acknowledge that you have read and understood these legislative requirements.
