“I have really enjoyed developing meaningful relationships with families and clients. It’s been so rewarding to help people to learn ways to communicate that allow them to engage with their communities. Celebrating positive moments like school awards and full attendance days are just some of the little things that let me know we’re making a difference.”

Nathan joined Aspect as a Graduate Speech Pathologist in February 2022. Previously, he taught Year 6 English at an Australian International School in Saigon. Teaching overseas he quickly realised how access to language can make a significant impact on quality of life and access to learning. With his interest in language and literacy when he moved back to Australia, he decided to specialise in Speech Pathology, and worked as a casual teacher while studying part-time.

As a speech pathologist, Nathan works both on site at Aspect’s Vern Barnett School and with itinerant participants, and is enjoying the relationships that have formed between the students, participants and families he’s working with.

“Being an SP allows you to develop better relationships with participants and their families and take a holistic view to helping a person. Rather than trying to fit a child into a curriculum outcome, you can determine outcomes based on their strengths, interests and abilities.”

Nathan has also felt supported by staff and through the training program, as he’s built his caseload.

“Aspect have a positive and supportive team, and extensive internal training. It’s been a great start and has provided extra opportunities for industry-related training. I have also been able to follow-up on training for personal interest area, such as Lego-based therapy, all of which I’ve put into practice in my role.”
