Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with a Disability

The Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability (Disability Royal Commission) was established on 4 April 2019 by the Federal Government of Australia.

The aim of the Royal Commission is to help inform Australian governments, institutions and the wider community on how to prevent, and better protect, people with disability from experiencing violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation in the future.

Aspect has voiced it’s support for the establishment of the Commission and is encouraging the autistic and autism communities, staff and the general public to read about the Disability Royal Commission and how they can make a submission.

The Disability Royal Commission is considering the lived experiences in any setting involving:

• Incidents of violence, neglect, abuse, exploitation of people with disability
• Complaints processes and outcomes; and
• Lack of access to support or services

In October 2020 the Disability Royal Commission released an Interim Report.

This report talks about how the Disability Royal Commission works and what it has done in the first 15 months of operations. The report talks about key themes that the Disability Royal Commission has found so far, but does not make any recommendations.

The Australian Government has established a website which provides information, including Easy Read information and Auslan videos, about the Disability Commission, including information on the Terms of Reference, Submissions, News and Fact Sheets.

A new law was passed in Parliament, to protect confidential information provided to the Disability Royal Commission (DRC) beyond the life of the Commission.
