What is this research study about?

This study aims to help determine if brain imaging can be used to study language comprehension in minimally-verbal autistic children.

Why should I help?

The findings of this study will be used to develop a clinical test of language comprehension for children who may understand more than they can say.
Participants are reimbursed $20 per hour of participation (around 4 hours in total).

Who can take part?

You are invited to take part in this study if your child is between 6 and 12 years old, has a diagnosis of autism and does not speak or only say a few words.

Who is conducting this study?

This study is funded by a Cognitive Science Postgraduate Research Grant from Macquarie University.
This study is being conducted by Selene Petit, Professor Liz Pellicano, Dr Nicholas Badcock and Dr Alexandra Woolgar at the Department of Cognitive Science, Macquarie University, Sydney.

What will I be asked to do?

You and your child will be invited to participate in two sessions. The first session will involve cognitive assessments of your child, including the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS), is a play-based test to characterise your child’s profile of behaviours, and the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test, to test your child’s understanding of single words. You will also be asked to fill out background questionnaires about your child.

The second session will involve your child listening to spoken sentences accompanied by short animations, whilst wearing a brain imaging device called electroencephalography (EEG). EEG records the electric fields that are emitted by the brain as it processes information. It involves wearing a cap or a headset holding electrodes that connect with the scalp through some gel or some wet cotton rolls. This method is safe, painless, and silent.

When and where?

Each session will last for up to two hours, and will be conducted at the Australian Hearing Hub at Macquarie University in Sydney.
