Positive Behaviour Support

Aspect Positive Behaviour Support encourages children, young people and adults to develop the skills for an improved quality of life.

Aspect Positive Behaviour Support encourages children, young people and adults to develop skills that will help them improve their quality of life, develop positive relationships, have choices and participate in their community.

Aspect’s Positive Behaviour Support team includes psychologists, speech therapists, educators and case managers. Our approach meets the Association for Positive Behaviour Supports Standards, the requirements of the Ageing Disability and Home Care (ADHC) Policy and Practice Manual and Positive Practice Framework - Department of Human Services (DHS) 2011 on Positive Behaviour Support.

Aspect's goal is to support individuals on the spectrum and with other disabilities to lead independent and rewarding lives.

1) Positive Behaviour Support workshops – “Recipe for Success”

‘Recipe for Success’ is a unique autism specific Positive Behaviour Support workshop. It has been designed using contemporary evidence based strategies by Aspect’s Positive Behaviour Support Team as part of their direct work with families.

By the end of each 3 day workshop every family will have been guided step by step to write their own Autism specific Positive Behaviour Support plan based on a chosen behaviour.

Who:    Families of people with autism & challenging behaviour of all ages 
             (collaborating professionals are invited)
What:   3 day workshops

(The Workshops are funded by the Department of Family & Community Services and are free of charge for families. Fees apply for professionals attending without families).

2) NSW Behaviour Intervention Service (BIS)

Using a family-centred, positive behaviour support approach to working with young people, the Aspect Behaviour Intervention Service develops a comprehensive support plan.

This is done in partnership with parents, schools, and other professionals to build knowledge and skills, and by collecting information to help analyse the ‘function’ of challenging behaviour to better understand why it keeps happening. BIS is funded by the Department of Family & Community Services and offers two levels of support (i) workshop (ii) workshop plus home based support

Who:     Clients must be between 0 to 18 years of age with a
              Diagnosis of any developmental disability . Applications 
              are approved quarterly by a selection panel (made up
              of ADHC, service providers & professionals)
What:    3 day workshops plus home based support
Where:  in 5 LGA’s - Penrith, Blue Mountains, Hawkesbury, Nepean & 
               Blacktown (Please note that there are limited places)

3) NSW Adolescent Support:

Aspect Adolescent Support provides combined service coordination and positive behaviour support to adolescents with autism and high support needs, and to their families.

The service is funded by Ageing, Disability and Homecare (ADHC), NSW Department of Family and Community Services, to work within the Metro North Region of Sydney.

It aims to build the capacity of the teams supporting young people to consistently implement evidence-based strategies with a view to stable home and school placements, participation in a range of everyday community activities and improved quality of life.

Who:     Clients must be 12 to 18 years of age, with a diagnosis 
              of autism plus an Intellectual Disability
What:    Long term comprehensive support service.
Where: Sydney Metro North across 21 LGA’s
When:   Funded and approved by ADHC selection panel, via quarterly
              referral form & approval panel

4) Behaviour Support Implementer Respite - NSW

Provides information and coaching to help staff in respite units implement Positive Behaviour Support strategies so individuals with a disability and families can make the most of respite opportunities.

This program is funded by the Department of Family & Community Services to support the Nepean and Blue Mountains area.

Who:     Clients of any age, with a diagnosis of a developmental disability
              in respite where there are behaviours of concern impacting respite
What:    Implementation support in centre based respite units.
Where:  Nepean & Blue Mountains
When:   On-going referrals via ADHC Respite units

5) Consultancy & Fee for Service - NSW & VIC

Aspect Behaviour Support Consultancy is a fee for service program of Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect). The Consultancy specialises in positive behaviour support training and workshops around children, young people and adults with autism.  Consultancy clients include families and government and non-government service providers.

Who:     Children, Adolescents and Adults, with a diagnosis of autism
What:    Aspect's Behaviour Support Consultancy works within a person
              centred framework with individuals with autism to develop their skills and contribute to improving 
              their quality of life. Goal's include active participation in the
              community, developing rewarding relationships and enabling 
              individuals to be more independent and make choices.
Where:  NSW
When:   By appointment with Aspect staff

6) Aspect Victoria (VIC) - Positive Behaviour Support Program

The Aspect VIC Positive Behaviour Support Program is funded through the Department of Human Services and is offered FREE to parents/carers of children and young adults diagnosed with autism aged 6 – 25 years of age.

Who:     Parents / Carers of children and young adults diagnosed with 
             Autism aged 6 – 25 years of age and living at home.
What:   The program is a tiered system offering three different levels of support:

             1. Positive Behaviour Support Workshops (Group training and
                 information)

             2. Post Workshop Consultation (Short term additional assistance 
                 for families needing support with their individual behaviour support 
                 plan following attendance at a workshop)

             3. Individual Behaviour Support Coordination (‘Wrap around’
                 team approach to provide support to a small number of families
                 with a child or young person with complex needs or enduring
                 challenges. Individuals requiring this level of support may be
                 of significant risk of family breakdown).
