It is important for parents and carers to understand that the behaviour exhibited by people on the spectrum is usually an attempt by them to communicate their feelings or to cope with a particular situation.
Understanding the causes of some behaviour allows parents to develop corresponding solutions and strategies. Often physical exercise, some time alone, breathing techniques or relaxing music are enough to give comfort to a person on the spectrum who is experiencing stress or anxiety.
Other parents and carers can be the best resource for understanding what causes challenging behaviour and for learning strategies that support people on the spectrum.
