Families of children with autism in Canberra are invited to a workshop on 30 October that will provide them with practical strategies on self-care and building family resilience, toilet training and the transition to preschool and school.

Developed by Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect), one of Australia’s leading service providers working with people with autism and other disabilities, the workshop program is designed to help families overcome many of the common challenges present in the early years for children with autism. The workshop is presented by Aspect Early Intervention Specialists and draws from evidence based and practical experiences.

Maryanne Pease, Aspect Early Intervention Specialist and workshop presenter said, “the workshop highlights the importance of self-care and family strengths to build strong, resilient family networks that can adapt and bounce back from the challenges they may experience.”

“Families will walk away with a better understanding of how to build a positive partnership with their child’s school, including a successful transition and placement. Families also gain an insight into toilet training their child including identifying the signs of readiness and building independence,” she said.

All participants will receive a copy of the latest edition of the ‘A how to guide for toileting training your child with autism written by Marina Baily and Genevieve Johnsson, Psychologists and Early Intervention Specialists at Autism Spectrum Australia.

The workshop is an Aspect Practice initiative, sharing evidence-informed practice grounded in applied research in workshops and consultancies around Australia with people with autism, their families, communities and organisations committed to improving the lives of people with autism.

The early childhood workshop will take place at Hotel Kurrajong on Wed 30 October from 9:15am to 2:30pm.
