Aspect Treetop School Adelaide
Aspect has been assisted by an Advisory Board of parents and members of the community to open South Australia's first autism specific school and was delighted to open Aspect Treetop School to students on 25th July 2016. Aspect brings to the new school 50 years of experience in providing specialist education to students on the autism spectrum.
Our main campus, located in Ashford, houses the school administration and 10 classes catering for students from Reception to Year 11. Our educational approach is the Aspect Comprehensive Approach (ACA). The Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) approach is used to support our students to regulate their behaviour. We focus on their strengths and special interests to motivate learning and celebrate the diversity and talents of our students.
Each student has an Individual Plan (IP) developed in partnership with families. Student outcomes may be implemented at individual, small group or whole school level and many goals are implemented across school, home and community environments. Aspect’s autism specific learning areas include communication, social skills, behaviour and sensory needs. These are taught in conjunction with the Australian Curriculum Key Learning Areas: English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities and Social Sciences, The Arts, Technologies, Health and Physical Education and Languages. Student individual interests are incorporated throughout the program. The school focuses on supporting students to develop functional skills to enhance transition and inclusion into less specialised settings.
Students have access to inside and outside play areas with a variety of equipment including trampolines, bikes and playground equipment. The school hall currently hosts a small library with books, games, building blocks, art supplies and access to a Commbox for music and educational programs. Future plan is in place for a new library. Students have access to a kitchen for cooking and life skills activities. We also provide access to many other services, events and activities through community access programs.
Classroom staff are supported by a Learning Support Team consisting of the Principal, Psychologist, Speech Pathologist, Occupational Therapist and executive staff. Each class teacher is also supported by a Student Support Officer (SSO)
The school has an active Parents and Friends group which organises events and fundraising throughout the school year.
